After releasing his previous single “Será Arte,” the former Baby City Club member and Puerto Rican experimental artist JUNE SMMR, is back with his newest offering “Compro Flores,” a fusion of alternative pop, urban, flamenco, and salsa sounds.
“Compro Flores” shows another side of JUNE SMMR’s ever-expanding sonic production and creativity. “I wrote the song after waking up in the middle of a flight from Miami to Seattle,” JUNE SMMR said about the new song. “I dreamt up the chorus and woke up eager to record a voice memo, but everyone around me was asleep. The lyrics just flowed, and I was desperate to record them so I wouldn’t forget them.”
Co-produced by Grammy-winning XAY (Bad Bunny, Eladio Carrión), “Compro Flores” came together after JUNE SMMR explained the song’s concept to him. He detailed the kick patterns, the castanets, the heel taps, and the flamenco clapping, the clave, and the overall sadness that ran through the piece. XAY understood that the topic was unconventional but was drawn to the idea of something completely different from what the producers were used to; and to experimenting and bringing to life that sound that had captivated JUNE SMMR in his dream.
Beyond the song’s experimental production, “Compro Flores” is a song that deals with the pain of losing the love of your life and the protagonist’s mental breakdown. It’s a cry for help, about being forgotten, about feeling like everything is slipping through your fingers, and a farewell letter. It’s a passionate song with a lot of drama; it’s not meant to blend in but to stand out for its hysteria and emotional shifts that let you feel the different stages the song’s protagonist goes through.
“Compro Flores” follows JUNE SMMR’s previous single “Será Arte,” released earlier this year. In this new musical chapter as a solo artist, JUNE SMMR aims to expand his sound while also honing in on his personal taste to express himself with total freedom.
